I am pleased to announce the initial launch of a new project, the Tobin Genealogy Website. Thanks to my friend Steve of Mr Papa’s World, I was able to find a great open source (free) web-based tool called PhpGedView. It enables you to easily build web pages from a “Gedcom file” that is generated by most common Genealogy software programs. I chose to use Legacy 6.0 Family Tree as my Genealogy software of choice. The standard version is free to download, and the Deluxe version is only $29.95. I upgraded to the Deluxe version to enable better access to research tools, although, most of the family tree making functions are all available on the free version.Â
Although there is very little data loaded into the Genealogy website at this time, I plan to update it extensively using data and research conducted by my late Great Uncle Doug Tobin of Underhill, Vermont, as a starting point. My father plans to bring the data down at Thanksgiving so that we can work on upgrading the Genealogy. I will also need to do some yeoman’s work on my mother’s and wife’s sides of the family as well. Right now, I am very happy that I have gotten the tools up and running and integrated (by way of link) into the Tobin Family Website.Â
To access the Tobin Genealogy website, simply click on the Tobin Family Crest under the Genealogy section of the sidebar to your right! Once there, you can use the icons at the top of the welcome page to access various charts, graphs and lists. For best results, you will need to request a new user account at the right side of the Tobin Genealogy website. If you have an account, you will be able to see more data regarding the living members of the Genealogy (some data shows as private if you don’t establish an account and log in). Let me know what you think!
Man, guess I am a bad influence on ya
your wife is gonna hate me at the least
A couple of comments:
1) the home link on the genealogy page points to phpgedview instead of your genealogy site
2) consider putting a link back to thetobins.org in the header in case folks got there from here and want to get back
FYI, I was working with a guy on creating a wordpress plugin for phpgedview. He started it, I began testing it and correting some bugs for it. As of a couple of weeks ago, his website disappeared, so not sure where we stand
I am not familiar with the offline software you chose. The phpgedview is full featured in that you can work completely online if you want. The one feature that I found it to be lacking though was a merge feature. You will find world family tree gedcoms that have some folks you want to add. phpgedview cant do that. That finally drove me to working offline. I use Family Tree Maker 16.
If you are going to use any online resource site, I would recommend http://www.ancestry.com above the others. I currrently subscribe and use them quite extensively especially for adding source material.
Nice Job!
Mr Papa
Steve, thanks for the comments! I haven’t fiddled with the PhpGedView theme yet, but I know I have to to fix the items you identified. I am currently working on award fee briefing, so I may not get to it until tomorrow night.
I saw the links and references to the wordpress plugin, but noted that the link was no longer valid. I also noted that it was the guy you were working with. A plug-in would be nice, but I am happy with it as a standalone product as well.
Legacy 6 Family Tree seems to be a a very good program. I read some reviews and it was rated as “one of the best”. I think the product you use is also highly rated.
I haven’t subscribed to any online sources yet, but I probably will eventually. Ancestry.com is one of many sources that are integrated into the research section of the Legacy 6 product.
Thanks,
Paaul
Paul,
FYI, new version of the phpgedview plugin is now available…

Hi! I am Delaney’s BFF!
hi another tobin here would love to find some of the family
Hello, Paul I just found this site through a google search and wanted to learn more about my family heritage. I live in MA. and have a cousin named Paul, also called PJ, could you be him, I was wondering?
Thanks…Will
Hello Paul,
You have a very nice and clean looking site.
I have a website that is driven by phpGedView, but am really tired of the very unfriendly look it provides. I would like to do something on the lines of what you have done integrating phpGedView into WordPress.
I’ve not used WordPress yet, but before I install it on my server and probably trash my site, I would like some pointers. WPPGV hasn’t been updated in over a year and I find no real advise offered.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Mark
Hi, googling for information while working on my family tree and found your page.
My Great Grandmother was Ellen Tobin m to William Clark, her parents were James Tobin & Hannah ?, i’ve hit a complete dead end here. Driving me crazy as on my other branches of my tree i’ve had it pretty easy…lol all the way back to the 900′s on two of them!
Anyway, if you have any info or are able to guide me in another direction you’d make my day..
Thanks in advance!
