Penguins Pound Flyers!
Click HERE for Video Highlight Reel:
The Pittsburgh Penguins went to Philadelphia tonight and beat up on the Flyers in good fashion, whipping them 8-2! The game started out with some sloppy play from the Penguins in the first period. They were outshot 14-4, but still left the period up by a score of 2-1 on goals by Sidney Crosby and Maxime Talbot. Talbot’s goal was a short-handed tally resulting from an unassisted breakaway after an embarrassing collision between Philadelphia’s Peter Forsberg and Simon Gagne coughed up the puck. When that happened, I told Karen that the Flyers were destined to lose the game….
The game turned into a Pittsburgh scoring melee in the second period with the Penguins outshooting the Flyers 14-7 and outscoring them 4-0. Two of the goals occurred within 18 seconds of each other, further demoralizing the Flyers. Maxime Talbot scored his second goal of the night and Sidney Crosby scored 2 more to complete his first career hat trick. Evgeni Malkin also got in on the action scoring the only Pittsburgh powerplay goal of the night. He has now scored a goal in each of the first five NHL games he has played!Â
The third period resulted in two additional tallies for the Penguins at the hands of Mark Recchi and Dominic Moore. The Moore goal was assisted by a very nice pass from John LeClair, who finally tallied his first point of the season. The Penguins also gave up a powerplay goal to the Flyers in the third…. but it was way too little, way too late for the troubled Flyers. This is the second drubbing that the Flyers have taken in about a week, having lost to Buffalo 9-1 last week. That loss resulted in Flyer General Manager Bobby Clarke’s resignation and the firing of head coach Ken Hitchcock. It is obvious the Flyer’s organization is still in disarray as they continue to struggle with the worst season start in franchise history.Â
The Penguins team is firing on all cylinders right now. All four lines contributed to the scoring tonight. This was their 4th straight victory, and their record is now 6 wins and 3 losses (impressive given last year’s performance). Even more impressive is that they have outscored their opponents 21-10 in their last 4 games. I know the season is still very young, but this has to be one of the most exciting teams to watch and follow in the NHL right now.
As for the dynamic duo, Sidney Crosby tallied 3 goals tonight for the natural hat trick and Evgeni Malkin scored a goal and two assists. Crosby now has 15 points in 9 games (137-point season pace) and Malkin has 9 points in 5 games (140-point season pace). If you get a chance to watch a Penguins game, I highly encourage you to…..even if you are not a hockey fan or a Penguins fan. It is just really exciting watching this team play right now, and in particular Crosby and Malkin.       Â
