Bad Day in Vermont
In what would seem an absurd headline coming out of Vermont, a gunman shot and killed two and injured at least three others this afternoon in Essex. The rampage started at a home near the Inn at Essex where the suspect killed a woman. He then travelled a couple miles to Essex Elementary School where he shot at least two more more, killing one. He then drove to a home on nearby Jericho Road where he shot one more person and then shot and injured himself. One of the injured and one of the two women killed were both friends and former co-workers of my mother, who used to be the secretary at Essex Elementary School. Thankfully she retired from there a few years ago and wasn’t caught up in this senseless tragedy. The shootings stemmed from a domestic disturbance between the suspect and his ex-girlfriend, who may have worked at the school. One of the two ladies killed was the mother of the ex-girlfriend. The other, who was a friend of my mother, was apparently just in the wrong place at the wrong time. What a very disturbing thing to have happen anywhere, much less in the small, peaceful town of Essex, Vermont.
